Trilogy

a Bashar Shbib film

TRILOGY (OR'D'UR, BETSY, AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE)

Compilation of three short Docu-Dramas, Total Length 89:00 min, 1983, 1984, 1986, 16mm, B&W/colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

OR'D'UR

1983, Canada, Color, 16mm, 41 min. Docu-drama

The title is a play on the French word for garbage, “ordure”. It is an experimental piece of work which brings to light inherent problems with documentary film, not to mention the language of a few prostitutes. A group of rowdy Montreal boys live under the wing of a tough matron-mama (Claire Nadon) who runs her house like a youth hostel. An ironic twist on cinema verité.

OR'D'UR.. a gritty, realistic look at male prostitution and sexual assault...an audacious, thought provoking work...one which raises important questions about the documentary idiom.
James Adams, Cinema Canada

JURY PRIZE, CANADIAN STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL 1984

BETSY

1984, Canada, Color, 16mm, 26 min. Comedy

A camp comedy of social mores. Right before her operation, a transsexual announces to her boss, mother and the world that her intention is to marry her straight lover Maurice during a meeting that her whiny, suburban in-laws will never forget.

...identification with the milieu...warmhearted...lasting humour...
Tom Waugh, The Body Politic

JURY PRIZE, CANADIAN STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL 1984

AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE

1986, Canada, Color/B&W, 16mm, 22 min. Docu-fiction

Transsexuals? Transvestites? Skinheads? Anarchy? Street life, hustling and drag are explored with sophistication, emotional resonance and that certain extra something that'll make you want to change the impossible to the incredible.

“ ...moving...dream-like, yearned love...”
Michel Beauchamp, 24 Images

Bread

an Albert Kish film

BREAD

Documentary, 11:00 min, 1983, 16mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

Both a visual feast and a didactic tool; from the wheat fields to the mill, from the bakery to the kitchen table, Bread is a dynamic and mouth-watering documentary.

Comparing homemade bread to its industrial counterpart, this hand-cut film will surely stir your appetite. The film’s powerful use of cinematic form is evident in its use of special camera angles that will spark the fancy of the filmmaker that lives within all of us. It also offers a rare opportunity to take a peek deep enough inside the oven to watch the yeast as it rises.

This enticing film starts off with wheat as it is grown and cultivated, and ends with buttered bread on the dinner table. Choosing to reveal variations in the manufacturing process, from bagels to stuffed loaves, the director, Albert Kish, succeeded, without difficulty, to generate a high level of interest about his photogenic subject. This documentary is recommended for all types of audiences; elementary school children, students of the social sciences or from culinary classes, even those in the work force and from other ethnic cultures. In terms of further research on the subject, you can always read the STUDY GUIDE that accompanies the film.

Cazalla de la Sierra

a Bashar Shbib film

CAZALLA DE LA SIERRA

Documentary, 26:39 min , 1985, 16mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

Maria Carmen Ladron de Gueverra is a Spanish entrepreneur – everyone knows her simply as Maria Carmen. She has purchased a monastery of the Order of Saint Bruno, which she renovates in the hills north of Seville. This documentary delves into the heart of the daily lives of the inhabitants of Cazalla de la Sierra and then takes us to visit the monastery five kilometers from the village. It belonged to the Carthusians, an order founded in France in the 11th century. It is one of their four remaining monasteries existing in the region. Of the quartet, this one is called “Cinderella” due to its colorful history. The monastery opened in the 15th century and is located on the “Via de la Plata” (“The Silver Road”). Traced by the Phoenicians long before the birth of Christ, this path still connects the south of Spain to Galicia, passing countless mines of gold and silver on the way.

With its combination of history, spirituality and nature, the site of La Cartuja happens to be particularly telling of the type of people that Maria Carmen hopes to be involved with in her project.

“When the church and the monastery regain their dignity as historical sites, this place will also become a venue for concerts, choral recitals, theater and other pertinent cultural events.” Maria Carmen then asks, “What could be simpler?”
