TRILOGY (OR'D'UR, BETSY, AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE)

Compilation of three short Docu-Dramas, Total Length 89:00 min, 1983, 1984, 1986, 16mm, B&W/colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

OR'D'UR

1983, Canada, Color, 16mm, 41 min. Docu-drama

The title is a play on the French word for garbage, “ordure”. It is an experimental piece of work which brings to light inherent problems with documentary film, not to mention the language of a few prostitutes. A group of rowdy Montreal boys live under the wing of a tough matron-mama (Claire Nadon) who runs her house like a youth hostel. An ironic twist on cinema verité.

OR'D'UR.. a gritty, realistic look at male prostitution and sexual assault...an audacious, thought provoking work...one which raises important questions about the documentary idiom.
James Adams, Cinema Canada

JURY PRIZE, CANADIAN STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL 1984

BETSY

1984, Canada, Color, 16mm, 26 min. Comedy

A camp comedy of social mores. Right before her operation, a transsexual announces to her boss, mother and the world that her intention is to marry her straight lover Maurice during a meeting that her whiny, suburban in-laws will never forget.

...identification with the milieu...warmhearted...lasting humour...
Tom Waugh, The Body Politic

JURY PRIZE, CANADIAN STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL 1984

AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE

1986, Canada, Color/B&W, 16mm, 22 min. Docu-fiction

Transsexuals? Transvestites? Skinheads? Anarchy? Street life, hustling and drag are explored with sophistication, emotional resonance and that certain extra something that'll make you want to change the impossible to the incredible.

“ ...moving...dream-like, yearned love...”
Michel Beauchamp, 24 Images

Memoirs

a Bashar Shbib film

MEMOIRS

Fiction, Drama, 82:34 min, 1984, 16mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

“An elegantly choreographed and archly stylized marriage of Fassbinder and Archie comics, the Montreal-made Memoirs is basically an end-of-the-world teen romance. A bright-eyed and idealistic young writer named Johnny Daze (Philippe Baylaucq) comes to town prowling for something to write about. What he finds is a sinister back alley forbidden zone peopled by gays, artists, prostitutes, transvestites and virtually every kind of conceivable bad influence. But his absolute undoing (and his initiation into the underworld) comes in the form of a bewitching but volatile artist/garbage collector/femme fatale named Ida Rage (Norma-Jean Sanders). Vampiristically sucked dry of both dramatic and psychological realism, Bashar Shbib's first feature is an exercise in pop-media deconstruction that takes the camp aesthetic to near-apocalyptic extremes. If Bertholt Brecht had directed Risky Business, it might have turned out something like this.” - Geoff Pevere

"... a Timothy Leary nightmare after one cocktail too many."
Salem Alaton, The Globe and Mail

“... sinister, stylized New Wave melodrama ... visually interesting throughout, with a rhinestone-in-the-rubble look...”
Janet Maslin, New York Times

"Where has all the value gone?"
Mark Halleck, New York Native

"Imagine Fassbinder without the good acting, passionate intensity or naked self-awareness..."
Robert Strauss, Los Angeles Reader

EVIXION

Fiction, Drama, 79:00 min, 1986, 16mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

Imagine a surreal narrative, without dialogue, in a style reminiscent of the twenties’ silent era and seen through the lens of moving voyeuristic camera that records the odd whereabouts of an unseemly group of marginal tenants. An aging homosexual (Armand Munroe) and his drug-addicted lover (Piotr Lysak), a couple of fitness-freak yuppies (Mark Bérubé and Daphna Kastner), an eccentric haitian lady and her son (Dalours Thornhill and Roland Smith), a punkish, crazy diva (Kennon Raines), as well as other bizarre and incongruous characters. united to prevent their eviction. Watch them unravel in anarchy while they fight against the foul manoeuvres of an ingenious but nasty landlord (Jean-Claude Gingras) and his accomplice (Claire Nadon) who wants them evicted once and for all...

The viewers ask themselves all sorts of questions about this film: “What am I watching?”, “What is happening before my eyes?” This is a film that will make you either leave the theater or keep you glued to your seat until the very end.

"Non narratif, non linéaire..." ("Non narrative, non linear...")
Michel Euvrard, Le Devoir

"...il s'en dégage une cohérence certaine, un humour féroce et une grande fébrilité de cinéaste...de bizarroÎdes personnages punky, surréalistes et invisibles." ("...shows a sure coherence, a wild humour and a lively energetic direction...with outlandish, punkish, surreal, invisible characters.")
Michel Villeneuve, Liaison St-Louis

“Jewels in the garbage” and “The soundtrack...is an accomplishment on its own." and "...those who are attuned to the madly unconventional, will probably be entranced...”
Jay Scott, The Globe and Mail

"EVIXION...is alert, funny, unexpected and, at the same time, very structured, astonishingly rigorous."
Michel Euvrard, Le Devoir

“Une telle frénésie, une telle dépense d'énergie, une telle génrosité libertaire...” (“Such frenzy, such energy, such generosity...”)
Thierry Horguelin, Continuum

“...rabid sense of alienation.”
José Arroyo, Cinema Canada

“...an infuriating experimental film...for seekers after esoteric film making.”

SEDUCTIO

Fiction, Drama, 80:29 min, 1987, 16mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

A trailer is parked deep in the forest. Its occupants are Mikael (Attila Bertalan) and his wife Melanie (Kathy Horner). Mikael is a film director. He is seeking locations to put an opera on video. Melanie lives in her own world, listening to the sounds of strange forest occupants. Are they the product of her imagination? Mikael thinks it’s all madness and has nothing but contempt for this woman obsessed by a mad fear of bears.

It is then when Susan (Susan Eyton-Jones) and Rikard (Mark Ettlinger) arrive. Susan, the beautiful diva with a superb voice much-admired by Mikael, is the star of his production, Rikard being the cameraman. The two couples hold out their complex inter-relationships.

The crew films the video. It is over with - or is it? Another episode takes place, one of seduction, fear and death that involves Rikard and Melanie. The two are caught in a web created by Mikael; an act which end tragically causes Melanie to meet her fate. Other events will follow in a path of connivance and disappearances. The course of events will finally bring back Mikael to his true fate...

CLAIR OBSCUR (THE STORK)

Fiction, Musical, 75:48 min, 1988, 35mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

Without dialogue, the film paints the picture of an old farm out in the country, not far from a village that has only one hotel. It is here where Edouard (Jack Spinner) lives with his son, Philip (Paul Babiak), his austere wife, Anne (Bobo Vian), and their daughter, Stephanie (Barbara Zsigovics).

Their daily routine is suddenly interrupted by the enigmatic Pol (Susan Eyton-Jones), a singer who returns to the village after several years' absence. Under her spell, Philip feels inexorably drawn to the hotel where she is singing. In neglecting his family, tensions begin to arise.

Thus ensues an altercation between father and son: Edouard confronts Philip for refusing to accept his inevitable responsibilities, which erupts in a physical brawl. Edouard becomes injured and bedridden. Meanwhile, despite Anne being the mother of Philip’s child, she finds great difficulty in trying to rekindle their marriage. Obsessed by her desire for vengeance, she withdraws into herself by day and at night, takes to sleepwalking. Conflicts between the members of the family reach an eventual climax and the unexpected arrival of a stork culminates in a turbulent, but happy ending.

"... a feast of colour and detail ..."
Ina Warren, The Gazette

“Undeniably original... a daydream that oscillates between the innocent world of children and the violent one of adults... images are as moving as they are strange: the artistry serves both poetry and tenderness..."
Yves Lafontaine, 24 Images

“...the magical quality of the film is well-executed... a lyrical piece...impressions are felt, images linger, moods are drawn... colours are lush...”
Toby Zeldin, Cinema Canada

“A fairy tale for adults and opera lovers... Audacious!”

Synopsis

Amelia (Kathleen Horner) and Lai (Andrea Sadler) are two sisters who live in a remote country village. Their tranquil existence is disturbed by the emergence of Slu (Atilla Bertalan) – an old lover of Amelia’s who has narrowly escaped prison. He spends a week with the two women.  Being faced with Lai’s sensitive and fragile beauty, Slu becomes hopelessly attracted. Despite the man’s relentless advances toward her, she resists and an eerie, unrequited love triangle arises. Remaining indifferent to the lust she arouses within him, Lai takes refuge in memories of her youth, which she recounts through poetry and song. In a moment of extreme frustration, the fugitive attempts to consummate his desire for her, against her will. It is then that Lai gives vent to his rage. Passion and tempers rise and fall, flare and die, and when the time is up, death. 15 Ugly Sisters is a poetic film that explores themes of love, attraction and moral bonds between human beings.

That news doesn't exactly cheer their current mates, Suzie (Lori Eastside) and Ted (Dick Monday); but the foursome are willing to give it a try.

They all move into Leopold's mansion to conceive the "money baby", with a certified witness (David Charles), the uncle's devoted butler (Ivan Roth) and a gaggle of therapists in tow. CRACK ME UP

Fiction, Drama, 75:25 min, 1991, 35mm, colour, NTSC.

Synopsis

THE BLOND, THE BLIND AND THE BROTHEL...

The film weaves the tale of Louie B. (Tim Brazzil), a hapless cowboy who thinks the world would be a better place if strangers would kiss each other more often. After a run-in with a band of crooks headed by Stacey, (Mary Crosby), Louie goes blind. He is taken in by Billie Jean – a tough-love prostitute (Daphna Kastner), and her colleagues – who are as gay as they are straight.

What follows is a fabulously eclectic look into the life of an East Hollywood, Heidi Fleiss-style bordello for the working man, whose goal it is to liberate heterosexual social mores.

"...sweet little charmer...good dialogue, gritty direction and the regular mix of hip tricks..."
Katherine Monk, Vancouver Sun

"... slummy camp, porno spoof and slice-of-life realism... bitchy, funny and sad."
